Vipers Blank The Capitals 4-0

Some quick goals and timely saves were the recipe for the Vipers as they scored in the first minute of the first and second periods to shut out the Cowichan Valley Capitals 4-0 at the Island Savings Centre.

The Vipers got started off in a hurry as just 28 seconds into the game, Jimmy Lambert was sprung on a breakaway and made no mistake ripping home a shot blocker side to make it 1-0. The Capitals responded with a handful of shifts in the Viper zone, but Yamnitsky turned aside some chances. The Caps would get two powerplays but the Viper PK was solid killing both off. The Vipers had more great chances, but Michael Corson was on point stopping 11 straight shots to end the period with Vernon leading 1-0.

As they did a period earlier, it was the opening shift of the period that netted a goal as Michael Young let loose a slapper with a double screen in front of Michael Corson to make it 2-0 early on. The Capitals generated some offensive zone momentum thanks to a couple of powerplays, but the Vipers were able to kill them off. Anthony Yamnitsky made a crucial save on a penalty shot to keep it 2-0 Vernon after 2 periods.

The Viper powerplay put the game out of reach as Derek Brown walked out from the red line and ripped a shot to the glove side of Corson. Three minutes later, Latta set him up thanks to a brilliant pass, and Brown made a great move to finish off the scoring play to make it 4-0. The Vipers tightened up from there, but a few more timely saves were need from Yamnitsky as he would shut the door with 24 saves for his third shut out of the year.

The Vipers will finish the road portion of their season Sunday afternoon in Alberni Valley to take on the Bulldogs. You can catch all the action on 1075 Beach Radio.
