Vipers Lose 3-2 In OT

VERNON, B.C., OCTOBER 7, 2016 – The Vernon Vipers were shocked by the Surrey Eagles 3-2 in overtime following a close game at Kal Tire Place. The Eagles came into the contest with just one win in eight starts and sitting in the bottom of the standings while the Vipers were tied for second in the Interior Division with the Merritt Centennials.

Neither team could find the back of the net in the opening period but the Eagles would get on the board 13:30 into the middle frame as Ashton Calder was able to score his fourth of the season. The Vipers would tie the game up on a late period goal by Hunter Zandee.

In the third period…Vernon would go up 2-1 on a goal by defenceman Mitchell Oliver who took his time and placed a shot from the left face off circle over a sprawled out Michael Botiz who earned the start for the Eagles. Botiz who joined the Eagles in a trade with the Salmon Arm Silverbacks made a number of big saves to keep his team in the game. Just a minute after Oliver’s goal, Surrey’s Darious Davidson would tie the game up with a nice dangle beating a couple of Viper defencemen.

The game stayed tied in regulation setting the scene for Davidson to play OT hero as he scored just 38 seconds into the extra frame to give the Eagles the win.

Vipers Head Coach Mark Ferner says the Eagles played a good game but the Vipers couldn’t find the back of the net…
